Fashion trends 2023
Lesson plan overview
With this ESL lesson plan students will learn tons of useful vocabulary to talk about fashion trends, to describe what’s in style at the moment, and to talk about their own fashion styles. You can combine it with the worksheets: “Idioms: fashion” and “Phrasal verbs: shopping”, as well as the lesson “Are smart clothes the future?”.
Speaking: The lesson starts with an initial discussion about fashion trends and students’ attitudes towards fashion trends.
Functional language: Students learn different ways to say something is popular and fashionable (e.g. it’s all the rage, it’s having a moment, it’s catching on). They look at 8 sentences and underline the phrase that expresses that something is popular.
Vocabulary: Next, students learn 18 different fashion styles and trends (e.g. denim on denim, sheer, animal print) by matching the expressions to the correct photo. Then students use the expressions learned in the previous activity to write example sentences about fashion trends. After that students learn a few adjectives (bold, tacky, chic, flattering) and look back at the photos, giving their opinions about the different styles.
Video: Students catch a video called “Here are the top fashion trends for 2023”, featuring Shania Twain. First they tick the trends that are mentioned. Then, they complete the extracts given with a few expressions (go-to, be ahead of the curve, dress up, dress down, pull it off). After they watch the video, they match the expressions to their definitions.
Speaking: The last 2 activities are focused on speaking. First, students practise the expressions from the video discussing 5 conversation questions given. Then they look at a few sentences about fashion styles and talk about their own fashion style.
You can use the conversation cards for additional speaking practice.
