Phrasal verbs: clothes and fashion

Worksheet overview

This ESL worksheet is dedicated to phrasal verbs used when talking about clothes and fashion. You can also check out the worksheet “Idioms: fashion”.

The lesson starts with a short discussion about following fashion trends and students’ fashion styles.

The first group of fashion-related phrasal verbs (e.g. dress down, slip into, put on, glam up) are introduced through a short dialogue between 2 friends. Students match the phrasal verbs to their definitions. After that, students complete a multiple-choice practice activity. To activate the vocabulary, students look at photos and answer questions that will prompt them to use the phrasal verbs.

Next, the second group of phrasal verbs are introduced through 6 2-line dialogues (e.g. dress up, go with, throw on, try on). After matching the phrasal verbs to their definitions, students complete 6 questions with the correct verb, and then discuss the questions in pairs or small groups. Finally, students are given beginnings of dialogue and are asked to write a suitable answer using the phrasal verbs given.

For more speaking practice, and to review these phrasal verbs, you can use the conversation cards.
