The riches are in the niches
Lesson plan overview
This ESL worksheet on niche businesses and specialized markets is based on examples of businesses that focus on unique products, services, or customer segments. It is ideal for high B1 and B2-level English learners who are interested in entrepreneurship, business strategy, and consumer trends, as well as professionals who would like to find their niche. The lesson combines niche business vocabulary, functional language, and speaking activities, which encourage students not only to practice English but also to think critically about market specialization, business growth, and customer needs. Other lessons you might like are: “Brand differentiation“, “Personal branding“, “Idioms: image and reputation“, “Phrasal verbs: sales and selling“, “Would your business survive Dragons’ Den?“, “Business models“, “Elevator pitch“, and “Seasonality in business“.
Speaking: Introduction to Niches
The lesson begins with a speaking warm-up where students look at photos of niche businesses and discuss what these businesses sell, what makes them unique, and whether such businesses would work in their own country. This naturally introduces the concept of niches and market specialization. Next, they discuss a few questions about specializing in one product or service vs being a generalist.
Vocabulary: Niche Business Terms
Students match key business terms to their definitions (e.g., niche market, customer base, USP, profit margin, customization, mass market, underserved segment). They then complete sentences about the pros and cons of niche businesses, building the linguistic tools to discuss market strategies in depth.
Functional Language: Describing Your Niche
Learners practice using expressions to describe niche businesses, such as “We specialize in…”, “Our focus is on…”, and “We serve…”. This section reinforces functional language for presentations, marketing pitches, and professional communication.
Vocabulary in Context: Examples of Niche Businesses
Students explore real-world niche businesses in food and drink, travel and tourism, entertainment, and health and fitness. They discuss what makes each business unique, their target audience, and opportunities for customization or growth—combining vocabulary practice with critical thinking about market gaps and specialization.
Listening: The Riches Are in the Niches
Students watch a video called “The riches are in the niches” about the benefits of focusing on niche markets. They complete extracts with key vocabulary and reflect on strategies for narrowing business focus.
Speaking: Discussion and Reflection
In pairs or small groups, students brainstorm niche business ideas or identify their own professional niche. Guided questions help them consider underserved groups, shared passions, demographics, location-based opportunities, market gaps, and customized offerings. They then present their ideas, encouraging collaboration, discussion, and practical application of the language learned.
