Lesson plan overview

This Business English lesson is most appropriate for strong B1+ or B2-level students. Students will discuss FOMO marketing tactics, will learn useful business collocations, and will learn how to express wishes and regrets. Other lessons you may find interesting are: “Black Friday”, “Can you trust online reviews“, “The paradox of choice”, “Phrasal verbs: sales and selling”, “Phrasal verbs: shopping“.

Speaking: First, students discuss a few questions related to their shopping habits, and FOMO.

Vocabulary: Students create collocations related to FOMO marketing (e.g. to trigger FOMO, to entice the customer to buy, to offer rewards, to create a sense of scarcity, early bird discount, free shipping, limited-time offer, used-generated content). To practice, students paraphrase 9 sentences, using the expressions they’ve just learned.

Video: Students watch a video called “Top 10 FOMO marketing tactics”. First, they discuss the tactics, and then watch the video and complete 2 listening comprehension activities.

Reading and speaking: Students read different opinions on how not to fall for FOMO marketing tactics and they discuss a few questions given.

Grammar: Students learn grammar structures to discuss wishes and regrets. They complete one practice activity, and then discuss 9 questions given, using the grammar structures from this class.

For more speaking practice, you can use the conversation cards.
