Dress for success
Lesson plan overview
This intermediate Business English lesson is related to business attire, first impressions, and dress codes for different occasions. Students will discuss the topic and will learn useful vocabulary. Other lessons you might like are: “Elevator pitch”, “How to get promoted”, “Personal branding”, “Internships“, “Fashion trends”, “Phrasal verbs: clothes and fashion”, and “Idioms: fashion”.
Speaking: The lesson starts with a few conversation questions about first impressions. Then students look at and discuss 4 quotes related to appearance (e.g.”Dress for the job you want, not for the job you have.”).
Vocabulary: Next, students learn important vocabulary about business attire by matching the words to the correct photos (e.g. a tie, a suit, a pantsuit, heels, flats, blazer, briefcase), and discuss a few questions in order to practice these words.
Reading and vocabulary: Students read a few sentences related to dress code policy. They match a few expressions to their definitions (e.g. adhere to, dress-down, branded, jewelry, attire), and then discuss the dress code in their organizations.
Listening: Students watch a video called “Dressing for success”, and complete 2 listening comprehension activities, and engage in a post-listening discussion.
Speaking: Finally, students say what they would wear to a few different occasions.
