Employee mindset vs entrepreneur mindset

Lesson plan overview

This Business English worksheet explores the differences between an entrepreneurial mindset and an employee mindset, offering students a chance to discuss their attitudes toward work and identify which mindset aligns with them. Designed for intermediate ESL learners (B1-B2), this lesson focuses on vocabulary building, speaking practice, and listening comprehension. You can combine this lesson with the video-based lessons “Where are Europe’s innovative companies?“, “Would your business survive Dragons’ Den?“,   “Business models“, “Start and grow your side hustle”, “Quiet quitting”, “How to get promoted“, “Dealing with setbacks and failure“,  “Gambling“, and the worksheets “Idioms: entrepreneurship”. “Idioms: ambition” and “Idioms: burnout”.

Work Attitudes and Perceptions

  • Students begin by brainstorming their immediate thoughts about work, writing down the first 5 words that come to mind.
  • They categorize a set of work-related words (e.g., fulfillment, burnout, success, monotony, achievement) as positive or negative, and discuss which words resonate with their experiences.

Speaking Practice: Employees vs. Entrepreneurs

  • Students discuss the pros and cons of being an employee versus an entrepreneur, analyzing factors like job security, autonomy, risk-taking, personal growth, and work-life balance.
  • They evaluate sentences related to employee and entrepreneurial mindsets, identifying those that apply to them and reflecting on their personal preferences.

Vocabulary Expansion

  • Key verbs such as to thrive, to excel, to prioritize, to envision, to embrace, and to seize (an opportunity) are introduced in context.
  • Students match these verbs to their definitions and personalize the vocabulary by completing sentences based on their own experiences.

Listening: Students watch a video called  “10 characteristics of successful entrepreneurs” and complete 2 listening comprehension activities.

Speaking: The lesson concludes with a few conversation questions related to entrepreneurship.

For more speaking practice, you can use the conversation cards.
