Lesson plan overview
This Business ESL lesson is about workplace health and safety. It is perfect for B1-level learners, and helps learners build vocabulary related to protective equipment, improve speaking fluency, develop listening comprehension, and practice the first conditional to talk about workplace health and safety. Other lessons you might like are: “The importance of good posture“, “First aid“, “Holiday safety made simple“, “Insurance“, “Phrasal verbs: health“.
Speaking: Students discuss real-life workplace risks, safety procedures, and cultural differences in safety standards. Then they discuss different professions and match them to workplace risks, enhancing awareness of occupational hazards.
Vocabulary: Students learn key terms related to personal protective equipment (PPE) by matching the words with the correct photo.
Reading: Six detailed safety instruction texts help students connect language learning with practical knowledge and introduce key vocabulary terms ahead of the listening tasks.
Listening: Students watch an informative video on health and safety risk assessment called “Health and safety risk assessment and management”, complete comprehension tasks, and verify understanding with True/False statements. Then, they engage in a post-listening discussion and analyse their own workplaces (or hypothetical ones) to identify hazards and propose risk reduction strategies.
Grammar – First Conditional: Students are introduced to the first conditional and create real-life conditional sentences based on workplace safety scenarios.
