Why is football so popular?

This intermediate ESL lesson plan is about popular sports, and football in particular. Students will talk about popular sports in their countries and in the world, will learn tons of vocabulary related to football, and will watch a video on the topic. You might also like the lesson “The stadiums of Euro 2024“, or find more football-related lessons here. Speaking: The lesson starts with a few discussion questions. Then, students look at the descriptions of 8 sports, and try to guess the sport. After that they come up with 3 more sports and describe them to a partner.

Vocabulary: The lesson is focused on football vocabulary. Students complete a few activities and learn vocabulary to talk about people in football, parts of the pitch, and common football-related verbs.

Listening: Students watch a video called “Why is football the most popular sport?” and complete 3 different activities.

Finally, students engage in a post-listening discussion.
