Phrasal verbs: at the gym

Worksheet overview

This ESL worksheet is dedicated to phrasal verbs used when at the gym, or to talk about fitness and physical exercise. Students will learn and practise 12 phrasal verbs and will discuss their workout routines. You might also like the worksheet “Phrasal verbs: sport”.
The first group of phrasal verbs (e.g. work out, cool down, warm up, power through, keep up, burn off) is introduced through a short dialogue between 2 friends preparing to work out. Students match the phrasal verbs to their definitions. To practise, they complete a gap-fill activity. Next, they discuss 6 conversation questions given.
The rest of the phrasal verbs (e.g. bulk up, loosen up, build up, firm up, tone up) are introduced through 6 short dialogues. To practise, students write appropriate responses using a phrasal verb given.
The last 2 activities are focused on speaking: first, students make a list of 5 fitness methods and discuss the advantages and disadvantages of each one. Finally, they talk about different fitness goals and how they can be achieved, incorporating phrasal verbs from this lesson.
For more speaking practice, you can check out the conversation cards.
