Phrasal verbs: sport

Worksheet overview

This worksheet includes 12 phrasal verbs that are used when talking about sports, exercising and competitions. The first activity introduces 6 phrasal verbs (e.g. bulk up, take up, work off). Students work out their meaning from the sentences given and then match them to their meanings. As a practice exercise, students complete a few statements with the phrasal verbs and then discuss the statements in pairs or small groups. Next, students read a short text which introduces 6 other phrasal verbs, related to competitions (fall behind, catch up, kick in) and then match them to their definitions. Students practise with a multiple-choice activity. The worksheet concludes with 2 speaking activities: first students are given 4 different lines and from there they need to create different dialogues and keep the conversation going. The last activity is discussing a few conversation questions given. A few suggestions are given on where to see these verbs in real-life context. This ESL worksheet, together with the conversation cards can be used in various classes in order to practise these sport-related phrasal verbs. It would work great as an addition to a lesson about healthy lifestyle, sport, working out, tournaments and competitions.
