How are sports chosen for the Olympic Games?

Lesson plan overview

This lesson is dedicated to Olympic sports, and how sports are chosen to be included in the Olympic games. Students will learn vocabulary about Olympic sports, collocations, and will discuss their favorite Olympic sports and sports they would like to see included in the Games in the future. You might also like other lessons related to the Olympic Games, as well as other sports-related lessons, and the worksheets: “Idioms: sports performance”, and “Phrasal verbs: at the gym”, and “Phrasal verbs: sport”.

Speaking: The lesson starts with a few conversation questions about Olympic sports. Then, students are asked to brainstorm Olympic sports they know.

Vocabulary: students learn 12 Olympic sports by matching the words to the correct photo (e.g. relay, hurdles, pole vault, pommel horse, fencing, wrestling, weightlifting), and discuss 7 conversation questions. Next, students learn collocations they will hear when they watch the video (e.g. oversee a sport, file a petition, discontinue a sport, make a comeback, establish a precedent, fast-track a process).

Listening: Students watch a video called “How are sports chosen for the Olympic games”, and complete 2 listening comprehension activities.

Speaking: Finally, students are given a list of sports that are not currently Olympic sports, and are asked to discuss which ones they would like to see included. Here they might also need to research some of the sports.
