Detox from social media
Lesson plan overview
This ESL lesson plan for B1-B2 level students focuses on the topic of social media and provides a few useful tips on how to reduce the time we spend on social media every day. It provides many great speaking opportunities on a topic we can all relate to, and revises and expands useful vocabulary related to social media. You can combine it with the worksheets “Is technology making us dumb?“, “AI influencers“, “Smart homes“, “Phrasal verbs: social media“, and “Phrasal verbs: technology“.
Vocabulary: The lesson starts with an activity aiming to revise and teach the most common social media collocations (update a profile, tag someone, unfollow an account). Students then complete a few questions and use the prompts to start an initial discussion. After that students complete a pre-listening vocabulary matching activity and discuss the statements.
Listening: Students watch a video “Social Media Detox Tips: How to Quit Social Media Forever” Before watching the video, students brainstorm their own ideas on how we can use social media less. Then they check and compare their answers to the suggestions the speaker gives. Then they watch the video again and complete extracts from the video with the words given. The lesson wraps up with a conversation and opinions about the video.
Homework: 3 research topics are suggested which aim to develop the topic further. The topics, combined with the additional resources provided on theenglishflows.com provide plenty of extra opportunities for contact with topic-related vocabulary in order to reinforce and enrich it.
