Business processes
Lesson plan overview
This ESL lesson introduces learners to business processes across departments such as HR, finance, customer service, and operations. Designed for intermediate learners, the lesson builds workplace vocabulary, develops communication skills for describing tasks and workflows, and enhances students’ ability to explain and reflect on real-world business systems. Through a mix of listening, reading, vocabulary matching, and structured speaking tasks, students explore how businesses ensure consistency, efficiency, and collaboration. Other lessons you might like include “Phrasal verbs: efficiency”, “Phrasal verbs: business expansion“, “Productivity and AI tools“, “Employee onboadring“, and “Outsourcing”.
Speaking: The lesson begins with a warm-up discussion about work-related tasks, team collaboration, and common workplace challenges. Students reflect on how tasks are assigned, shared, or standardized, and consider the impact of inconsistent processes on team performance.
Vocabulary: Business Processes Across Departments
Students match key business process terms (e.g., workflow, streamline, automate, bottleneck) with definitions, then, through a short article, students explore how structured processes improve business scalability, quality, and consistency. They complete a gap-fill exercise using vocabulary from the previous activity and deepen their understanding of key terms in context.
Listening: Understanding Process Steps
Students watch a video called “Creating business processes” and identify key recommendations. In a follow-up activity, they evaluate statements as true or false. After that, they engage in a post-listening discussion.
Practice: Next, students categorize common processes by department (HR, IT, Sales, Finance, etc.) and add more processes to each department. Then they look at examples of processes explained step by step (handling complaints or processing invoices) and identify the missing steps. Learners build functional vocabulary to describe company systems and improve task handovers, approvals, and efficiency.
Language Focus: Describing a Process Clearly
This section introduces students to sequencing phrases (e.g., first, next, after that), passive voice (e.g., The request is approved), and imperative forms (Submit the form.). Learners apply these structures to explain workflows clearly and professionally.
Speaking: Handing Off a Process
Students imagine onboarding a new team member and must explain three key processes from their own (or a fictional) job. They practice giving clear instructions using sequencing, passive forms, and relevant vocabulary—helping prepare them for real workplace communication.
Reflection & Homework
Learners reflect on vocabulary and corrected errors, and are encouraged to research business-related topics such as automation, bottlenecks, and the consequences of ignoring procedures. Optional resources and videos support independent learning and vocabulary retention.
This lesson is ideal for professionals, business English students, or job-seekers preparing to work in English-speaking environments. It pairs well with lessons on SOPs (standard operating procedures), workplace communication, and business writing.
