At the beauty salon

Lesson plan overview

This engaging pre-intermediate lesson introduces students to the world of beauty salons, covering vocabulary related to treatments, skin types, and skincare routines. It is perfect for learners working in the beauty industry (e.g., beauty therapists, estheticians, hairstylists, and nail technicians) or anyone interested in beauty and skincare. Speaking: The lesson begins with a discussion on beauty salons, prompting students to share their experiences and thoughts on beauty treatments.

Vocabulary: Students explore 12 common beauty treatments, such as facial, tinting, threading, hair extensions, eyelash extensions, massage, blow-dry. After learning the treatments, they discuss their favourite options and share their preferences.

Video: Students watch a video called “The role of a beauty therapist”, and complete a gap-fill activity.

Vocabulary: Students review four short dialogues set in a beauty salon and complete them using provided phrases. They then create their own role-plays for five different salon scenarios, enhancing their conversational skills.

Vocabulary development: Students learn vocabulary for parts of the face (eyelashes, eyebrows, cheek, chin, jawline) and skin issues (pimples, blackheads, flaky skin, rough skin, wrinkles, itchy skin).

Reading and speaking: Students read descriptions of five people’s skin types (e.g., oily, dry, combination, sensitive, normal) and match each to the correct type. They discuss suitable skincare routines for each skin type. Students read five skincare tips and match them to the appropriate person, followed by a discussion on the tips and their own skincare habits.
