Video calls and cosmetic surgery

Lesson plan overview

This ESL worksheet for upper-intermediate and advanced students explores the rise in cosmetic surgery during the pandemic and how this trend is related to video calls. Students learn tons of vocabulary and collocations to talk about signs of ageing and have plenty of opportunities to discuss the topic and use the target vocabulary.

The worksheet starts with a speaking activities: students talk about their experience with videoconferencing and also about their attitudes towards cosmetic surgery.

Vocabulary: Students learn words related to ageing (wrinkles, crow’s feet, frown lines). Then they further expand their vocabulary by learning collocations (age gracefully, undergo surgery, unflattering angle). They practise the collocations by completing a few questions and using them as conversation starters.

Listening: Students watch a video “The Rise of Zoom Dysmorphia During the Pandemic” , divided into 3 parts, and complete 3 different tasks. In a post-listening discussion students share their impressions and opinions about the video.

Speaking: The worksheet concludes with a debate idea.

Homework: 3 research topics are suggested which aim to develop the topic further. The topics, combined with the additional resources provided on theenglishflows.com provide plenty of extra opportunities for contact with topic-related vocabulary in order to reinforce and enrich it
