Are staycations the new vacations?
Lesson plan overview
This pre-intermediate ESL lesson is about the topic of staycations and vacations. Students will talk about different activities and ideas to make the most of a staycation, will watch a short video, and will practise using different future tenses to talk about plans and travel plans. For higher-level students, you can check the video-based lessson plan “Unusual hotels” worksheets “Phrasal verbs: rest and relaxation“, “Phrasal verbs: travel”, “Idioms: holidays”, and “Idioms: the summer”.
Speaking: The lesson starts with a discussion about vacations, staycations and interesting activities students can do in their hometowns. Next, they are given 6 photos and are asked to talk about the different staycation ideas illustrated in the photos.
Reading: students take a look at 11 staycation ideas and talk about the ideas they like the most and the least.
Listening: Students watch a video “Staycation Ideas: Try these fun, low-cost activities where you live.” and complete 3 different activities.
Speaking: Next, students are given the beginning of a dialogue between 2 friends talking about their weekend plans and are asked to complete the dialogue and talk and evaluate at least 5 different ideas.
Grammar: Students review and practise the 3 most common tenses used to refer to the future (simple future, future with “going to” and present continuous). There is a short explanation about the key differences, a practice gap-fill activity.
Speaking: The last 2 activities are focused on speaking. First, students play a guessing game about different travel destinations. Lastly, they are given different questions with the 3 verb tenses learned in this lesson.
You can use the conversation cards for additional speaking practice.
This lesson will work well in combination with other lessons about travelling, summer plans, travel destinations, and fun activities.
