Inside Amazon’s fulfillment center
Lesson plan overview
By the end of this ESL lesson, students will be able to describe the key processes inside a fulfillment center, use business and logistics vocabulary with accuracy, and critically discuss the impact of technology, robotics, and workplace safety in modern warehouses. They will also strengthen listening comprehension, speaking fluency, and problem-solving skills by analyzing authentic video material about Amazon’s operations and applying it to realistic workplace scenarios.
Who this worksheet is for:
This lesson is designed for intermediate ESL learners, particularly those studying business English, supply chain management, operations, or workplace safety. It is ideal for learners who want to explore how logistics, technology, and human labor interact in global e-commerce.
Other lessons you might like are “What happens to our returns?” and “Workplace health and safety”.
Activities included in the worksheet:
Speaking (Lead-in): Learners begin with discussion questions about logistics, deliveries, and online shopping habits, connecting personal experiences with the theme.
Vocabulary (Fulfillment Center Processes): Students match six warehouse activities to their definitions (receiving, stowing, picking, packing, shipping, returns processing) and review key logistics terms.
Reading & Vocabulary Practice: Learners read detailed explanations of each warehouse stage and complete a gap-fill task using a word bank to reinforce core verbs and actions (e.g., scan, label, unload, track).
Vocabulary (Equipment & Actions): Students identify warehouse tools (forklift, pallet jack, wrapping machine, barcode scanner, conveyor belt, etc.) and practice action verbs (lift, carry, climb, unload, pull). Next, students learn words related to key equipment and physical actions at a warehouse.
Speaking (Workplace Safety): Learners discuss physical actions at a warehouse and connect them to common workplace injuries. They analyze risks and injury prevention, debating who is responsible for safety and how automation might help
Listening: Students watch a video about Amazon’s robotic fulfillment center, completing missing numbers and then answer multiple-choice comprehension questions, focusing on automation, injury rates, and new warehouse technologies such as Sparrow and Sequoia.
Speaking (Post-listening Debate): Learners discuss the future of automation, the role of humans in warehouses, and whether robots should replace repetitive jobs.
Speaking (Problem-Solving): In pairs, students propose solutions to common warehouse issues such as conveyor jams, WMS crashes, scanner malfunctions, staff shortages, and ghost inventory.
