Why we love fall
Lesson plan overview
This pre-intermediate and intermediate ESL lesson is about fall (or autumn) season. Students will learn useful vocabulary, will describe the changes that take place in fall, will watch a short video of people saying why they love fall, and will talk about what they love about fall. You can combine it with the lesson “Thanksgiving”. You might also like the worksheet “Phrasal verbs: autumn“.
The lesson starts with 5 conversation questions about fall seasons. Then, students take a look at 8 photos and use them to describe what changes happen in fall. After that, they read a bit more about each change and match the photos to the correct paragraph.
Vocabulary: Students take a look at a few words from the text (chilly, frost, snowfall, foliage, fresh produce, cozy) and discuss their meaning. Then, they complete 9 sentences with the correct word.
Listening: Students watch a video called “Why we love fall”. The first time they watch it, they write down 3 reasons the speakers mentioned. The second time they watch the video, they follow the transcript and complete with the words they hear. After that, students discuss why they love fall, using the beginnings of sentences given (My favorite thing about fall is…, I am obsessed with…, I really like how…).
Grammar: Students learn the difference between the verbs “to be” and “to get” to express states and transitions. First they find examples of using the verb “to get” to express change in the transcript of the video. Then, they complete 5 sentences with their own ideas.
Finally, students are given a task that could be done in class or as homework: to research and present to the class a fall festival or tradition from another country.
For additional speaking practice, you can use the printable set of conversation cards.
