The lesson begins with a few discussion questions about the current political situation in Russia and what students know about it.
Vocabulary: Students look at different words and expressions related to elections (e.g. ballot, turnout, polling station, to cast your vote, to spoil your ballot, rigging). They discuss the meaning of the words and then complete a text explaining the electoral process with the words. After that, they discuss a few questions about their own country.
Listening: Students watch a video called “Russia election: Putin wins 5th term in office with 87% of vote”, and complete 2 listening comprehension activities. Finally, they engage in a post-listening discussion, making predictions about the future, and what Vladimir Putin’s win might mean for the war in Ukraine.
