a politician giving a speech and people protesting

Phrasal verbs: politics

Worksheet overview

This ESL worksheet is about 12 phrasal verbs used in a political context. Students learn common phrasal verbs used in politics and use the speaking activities to practise them.
The first 7 phrasal verbs (e.g.stand for, stand by, crack down on, bring about) are introduced through a short text. Students work out the meanings of the phrasal verbs and match them to their definitions. After that, they complete 4 sentences with their own ideas and use them to discuss different political aspects with their partners or in small groups.
Next, the rest of the phrasal verbs (e.g. back down, rule out, push through, bring in) are introduced through a short dialogue. Students work out the meanings of the phrasal verbs and match them to their definitions.
To practise, students complete a multiple-choice activity.
The last 2 activities are focused on speaking: first, students answer 2 questions. Finally, they prepare a speech and practise giving their speech, using some of the phrasal verbs from this lesson.
You can use the conversation cards for additional speaking practice.
This worksheet can be combined with lessons about politics, politicians, and different social issues.
