Promotion? No thanks!
Lesson plan overview
This ESL worksheet focuses on the topic of promotions in the workplace and why more employees are choosing to turn them down. It is most suitable for B2-level learners. It explores key ideas such as work-life balance, burnout culture, changing career priorities, and the growing trend of conscious unbossing — a workplace trend where employees (particularly Gen Z) deliberately avoid traditional management roles in order to maintain autonomy, reduce stress, and protect their work-life balance. It is ideal for learners interested in business English, workplace communication, and modern career development. Students build essential vocabulary related to management, career growth, and employment trends, while also developing critical thinking and speaking skills. Other lessons you might like are “Is it time for a new job?“, “Phrasal verbs: job performance“.
Speaking: Lead-in and Discussion
The lesson begins with a discussion about what “success at work” means and how attitudes toward promotions may differ across generations. Students reflect on the benefits and downsides of moving into management roles and consider whether ambition always means becoming a leader.
Vocabulary: Workplace Trends and Career Development
Students learn and practice key expressions such as work-life balance, burnout culture, management role, company loyalty, and middle manager. They complete collocation-based activities and apply the vocabulary in realistic workplace scenarios. A second set of expressions (e.g., turn down an offer, climb the corporate ladder, be commensurate with) helps learners describe career decisions more precisely. Students practice the target vocabulary by evaluating different career moves.
Listening: Why People Are Turning Down Promotions
Students watch a multi-part video called “The real reason people are turning down promotion“, explaining the real reasons behind declining promotions. They complete gap-fill exercises, answer comprehension questions, and identify key themes such as shifting priorities, skepticism about management, and the importance of skill growth. Follow-up tasks check both general understanding and attention to detail, including attitudes toward compensation and burnout.
Speaking: Career Decisions and Trade-offs
Students analyse realistic job scenarios comparing current roles with promotion offers. They discuss whether they would accept or reject each opportunity, considering factors like salary, stress, responsibilities, and long-term satisfaction. This section encourages deeper reflection on personal values and workplace expectations.
