Trade wars

This Business English lesson explores the topic of trade wars and how global trade policies impact economies, businesses, and consumers. Students will discuss the effects of globalization, tariffs, and protectionism, learn essential economic vocabulary, and watch a video about real-world trade conflicts, including U.S. President Donald Trump’s trade policies and their global impact. Speaking: The lesson begins with conversation questions about globalization and international trade, encouraging students to reflect on how global markets shape their daily lives.

Vocabulary: Next, students expand their business vocabulary, learning key terms such as tariff, protectionism, global supply chain, recession, free trade, and trade war. They match the words to definitions, complete a gap-fill activity, and use the new vocabulary in discussion questions.

Listening: Students watch a video called “How New Tariffs on Mexico, Canada, and China Are Hitting U.S. Consumers”, which examines Donald Trump’s approach to tariffs and how his policies affected global trade. Students complete two listening comprehension activities and participate in a post-listening discussion about the economic consequences of protectionist policies.
