Snowstorms

This intermediate ESL lesson focuses on snowstorms, covering how to prepare your home for extreme winter weather and what to do if stranded in a car during a snowstorm. Students will learn essential vocabulary, discuss key survival strategies, and watch informative videos on the topic. Other lessons you might like are “First aid”, “Holiday safety made simple”, “Phrasal verbs: natural disasters”, and “Phrasal verbs: the weather”.

The lesson begins with conversation questions about snow and winter weather, encouraging students to share their experiences and thoughts.

Next, students build their vocabulary by completing sentences that describe six images related to snowstorms (e.g., blizzard, slippery, stranded, power outage). They then read five additional sentences to learn more key expressions (get snowed in, black ice, frostbite, hypothermia) before practicing through six discussion questions.

In the speaking section, students work in pairs or small groups to list essential items for snowstorm preparedness, both at home and in a vehicle. They then analyze different objects (e.g., blankets, flashlights, snacks, ice scraper, whistle) and decide on the five most important ones to have in a car emergency kit.

For listening practice, students first answer seven multiple-choice questions based on their existing knowledge. They then watch two videos to check their answers, followed by a post-listening discussion.
