Smart homes
Lesson plan overview
This technology-related ESL lesson plan is most suitable for B1-level adults and teens. Students will learn useful words and expressions to talk about smart homes, smart home devices and their functions, and collocations with “data”. You can also check out “Productivity and AI tools”, “Cybercrime and cybersecurity“, “Detox from social media”, and “Phrasal verbs: technology”.
The lesson starts with a speaking activity. Students are asked to talk about their dream homes and answer a few questions related to their dream homes.
Vocabulary: Students look at common smart home devices (e.g. smart locks, smart lighting, smart plugs, etc.). They match the words to the correct photo and then discuss their functions, how useful they are, etc. Then, students read very short descriptions of the most common features of each device and complete them with technology-related words (e.g. automated, voice commands, adjust, record, connected).
Listening: Students watch a video called “AI smart homes: The dawn of a futuristic era” and complete 2 listening comprehension activities. Then they engage in a post-listening discussion and a research task.
Vocabulary extension: Students learn verb + noun collocations with the word “data” (e.g. to share data, to store data, to back up data, to secure data, to retrieve data). Finally, they complete a multiple-choice activity about the collocations.
For more speaking practice, and to review the target vocabulary from this lesson, you can use the conversation cards.
