Oktoberfest (beer)
Lesson plan overview
This ESL lesson is for beer lovers! It features vocabulary and discussion questions about beer, as well as a video about Oktoberfest, and activities related to Oktoberfest. Other lessons you might like are “Visiting Germany (for EURO 2024)”, “Idioms: eating and drinking”, as well as other lessons related to alcohol: “How to describe wine” and “The surging sales of non-alcoholic drinks”.
Speaking: The lesson starts with a few conversation questions about beer and beer culture.
Vocabulary: Next, students look at a few words and expressions related to beer and match them to their definitions (e.g. brewery, beer belly, to chug, to clink your glasses, a stein). Next, students complete a few questions with the correct word, and answer the questions.
Video: Students watch a video called “Oktoberfest: Answering Your Burning Questions”. The video is divided into 3 parts, and students complete a separate task for each part. Next, they watch the full video and take some notes. Next, they use the same table to complete with information about a local festival. Then they compare the two, using a few useful expressions given to express similarities and contrast.
Reading: Students read about different beer styles (this task could be assigned as homework), and complete a reading comprehension activity. Finally, they talk about their favourite beer style.
