How to get promoted

Lesson plan overview

In this highly relatable Business English lesson plan, students will discuss the best ways to get promoted, as well as possible challenges and how to overcome them when trying to advance in your career. They will learn many useful collocations related to getting promoted, and will have plenty of opportunities to talk about the topic from different angles. Other related lessons you might find useful are the following: “Labor unions“, “Dress for success“, “Performance appraisals”, “What is holding women back at work”, “Employee mindset vs entrepreneur mindset“, “The importance of company culture”, “Quiet quitting and quiet firing”, as well as the worksheets: “Phrasal verbs: job performance”, “Phrasal verbs: leadership and management”, “Phrasal verbs: success”, “Idioms: workplace ethics”, and “Idioms: ambition”.

Speaking: The lesson starts with 3 speaking activities. First, students discuss 4 questions about promotions. Next, they look at different ways that can help people get a promotion, and discuss which of them are the most effective ones. Finally, they look at different scenarios that might hinder an employee’s chances of a promotion, and discuss what they would do in each case.

Vocabulary: Students learn collocation and synonyms related to promotions (e.g. land a promotion, stand out, leverage something, vouch for sometones, move up one’s career). To practice, they complete 6 sentences with a suitable expression. Then, they discuss 4 conversation questions given and use the target vocabulary.

Listening: Students watch a video called “What you need to get promoted in 2024” and complete 2 listening comprehension activities.

Speaking: After watching the video, students interview each other and reflect on different questions raised in the video. Next, they are given debate statements related to promotions and discuss them.

Vocabulary review: Finally, students review the vocabulary from this lesson by completing a multiple-choice activity.
