How to ace your job interview
Lesson plan overview
This ESL lesson is useful for upper-intermediate and advanced students who are preparing to attend a job interview as well as students who need to interview candidates in English. Students learn a lot of useful vocabulary for job interviews through various activities and practise answering common job interview questions. You can combine it with the worksheets: “Phrasal verbs: Human resources“, and “Phrasal vebrs: Job interviews“, or check out the video-based lesson plans: “How to optimize your resume“, “Internships“, and “How to avoid job scams“.
Vocabulary: After an initial discussion, students work on different Dos and Don’t about job interviews by placing phrases in the correct category and learn topic-related vocabulary (e.g. badmouth your employer, tailor your CV, dress down). Next, students work in pairs and write down 5 common job interview questions. They analyze good and bad answers to common questions, giving their reasons.
Listening: Before they watch the video, students predict what kind of information they are going to hear about each tip mentioned. Then they watch a video: “Top interview tips for 2021”, which is broken down into 3 parts and complete a multiple-choice, a matching and a gap-fill exercise.
Speaking: This lesson ends with a communicative activity in which students practise answering common interview questions.
Homework: 3 research questions are provided to help students practise the target vocabulary outside of the classroom.
