Holy Week in Spain
Lesson plan overview
This Easter-related ESL lesson is about Holy Week in Spain, with a video about how it is celebrated in Seville. It is most suitable for B2-level students. Students will work on vocabulary and word formation, will talk about Easter, and will watch a video about Holy Week in Seville, Spain. You can also check out the lessons “Fabergé eggs” and “Easter”.
The lesson starts with a few conversation questions about Easter celebrations.
Vocabulary: Next, students brainstorm words related to Easter and Holy Week around the world, such as activities, religious terms, and symbols. Then they are given words to put into the correct category.
Word formation: Next, students fill a word formation table with words related to Holy Week (e.g. devoted, grief, repent, passion, penitence, reflection). To practice, they choose the correct word to complete 8 pairs of sentences.
Listening: Students watch a video called “Rick Steves’ European Easter: Palm Sunday in Sevilla” and complete 2 listening comprehension activities.
Finally, students engage in a post-listening discussion.
