Fabergé eggs
Lesson plan overview
This upper-intermediate to advanced ESL lesson plan is about Fabergé eggs. Students will learn useful vocabulary about jewels and treasures, will watch a video about the history of Fabergé eggs and how one of them was found, and will speculate about the fate of the missing Fabergé eggs. For other Easter-related lessons, you can check the video-based lessons “Unsolved mysteries“, “Holy Week in Spain”, “Easter”, “Are you a collector or a hoarder“, and “Stealth wealth“.
The lesson starts with a few conversation questions about jewels, Fabergé eggs, and other rare objects. Students are also given the names of different gemstones to aid them when discussing the questions.
Vocabulary: Students look at sentences containing words and expressions they will later hear in the video (e.g. auction, flea market, shrouded in mystery, face an uncertain fate, stumble upon). Students match the words to their definitions, and then answer a few questions in order to practice them.
Listening: Next, students watch a video called “He found a $30 million jewel at a flea market!”, and answer 8 comprehension questions. Then they engage in a post-listening discussion. After that, students are given a list of adjectives (e.g. rare, valuable, exquisite, luxurious, illustrious, priceless). After discussing the meaning of the adjectives, students watch the video again and complete an extract from the video with the correct adjective.
Grammar: Students look at a brief explanation of the use of might have and could have + past participle to speculate about past events. Then, they speculate about the fate of the missing Fabergé eggs, using the structures.
Speaking: The last 2 activities are focused on speaking. Students discuss lost treasures and mysteries. Finally, they are asked to research and prepare a short presentation about a lost artifact or a mystery they find interesting.
