Event management: Crowd control
Lesson plan overview
In this B2-C1 ESL lesson on crowd management and event safety, students explore the risks associated with large gatherings and learn how organisers prevent accidents and manage crowds. Learners develop vocabulary related to crowd control, security measures, queueing systems, and emergency procedures, while practising speaking, listening, and critical thinking skills in the context of real-world events. The lesson introduces examples such as the Astroworld Festival crowd crush and the Itaewon Halloween tragedy, helping students understand the importance of planning and safety at large-scale events. Activities Overview
Speaking – Lead-in Discussion: Students begin by sharing their experiences at concerts, festivals, and sporting events, discussing feelings in large crowds and the types of security measures they have seen. This activity activates prior knowledge and sets the stage for exploring crowd safety. Then, they look at a list of possible crowd-related dangers, and say how serious the danger is, what the possible consequences are, and how it could be prevented.
Critical Thinking – Analysing Real Events: Students read 2 examples of events where inadequate crowd control measures led to tragedies: Astroworld Festival crowd crush in Houston, Texas (2021) and the Itaewon Halloween tragedy in Seoul, South Korea (2022). Students discuss what went wrong at these events and evaluate which safety measures could have prevented the incidents.
Vocabulary – Crowd Control Language: Learners match key verbs and expressions such as “queue,” “disperse,” “crush,” “funnel through,” and “deploy” to their definitions and use them in context.
Listening – Crowd Management Video: Students watch a video called “Expert Explains the Hidden Crowd Engineering Behind Event Venues”, divided into several parts, covering topics such as queuing systems, controlled entry, and concession stand efficiency. They complete tables and fill-in-the-blank activities while noting the advantages and disadvantages of different crowd control methods.
Speaking – Safety Measures and Planning: Students work in pairs or groups to plan crowd management for various events, from small school concerts to major festivals. They look at safety measures like “barriers,” “CCTV,” “timed entry,” and “first aid stations,” helping students describe potential dangers and preventive strategies. Activities focus on identifying essential, recommended, and unnecessary crowd control measures, encouraging reasoning and justifying opinions.
