Lesson plan overview
This breaking news ESL lesson plan is about Donald Trump winning the U.S. presidential election. Students will discuss various questions, will watch a video, and will read about and discuss Trump’s key policies. Other lessons you might like are: “United States presidential election”, and “Phrasal verbs: elections”.
Speaking: The lesson starts with a few conversation questions about the U.S. presidential elections and the outcome, key issues that were important to voters, and tactics used during the campaign (e.g. Elon Musk’s 1-million-a-day giveaway).
Listening: Students watch a video called “Why Americans voted for Trump (again)”, and answer a few questions in their own words. Then they engage in a post-listening discussion.
Reading: Students discuss and read an overview of Trump’s policies in 10 areas.
Vocabulary: Students match words and expressions from the text (e.g. pledge, vow, tariffs, tax cuts, dismantle) to their definitions and complete a gap-fill activity. Finally, students discuss the proposed policies and their impact.
