Activities overview:

Lead-In Discussion – Reputation in the Digital Age:
Students begin by discussing the importance of reputation for politicians, companies, celebrities, influencers, and executives. Guided questions explore how reputations are built, damaged, and protected. Learners brainstorm modern risks, including social media, messaging apps, AI-generated content, review sites, and workplace conflicts. This activity activates prior knowledge and introduces key legal concepts.

Vocabulary Development – Legal Terms & Word Formation:
Learners study essential legal vocabulary such as allegation, defamation, litigation, testimony, deposition, settlement, retraction, and damages. Word formation exercises focus on suffixes like -tion, -ment, and -ony. Matching definitions, example sentences, and collocations (file a lawsuit, award damages, dismiss a case, reach a settlement) reinforce accurate usage in professional contexts.

Practice – Multiple Choice & Collocations:
Students complete sentence-completion and multiple-choice exercises to strengthen understanding of legal terminology. Collocation activities help learners correctly combine verbs and legal nouns (seek damages, rebut an allegation, issue a statement). Paraphrasing tasks build fluency and flexibility in legal English.

Listening Activities – Legal Expert on Defamation:
The lesson includes a multi-part video called “Tips from a legal expert on dealing with defamation” featuring a legal expert explaining libel, slander, presumed damages, truth as a defense, and the difference between fact and opinion. Students complete guided notes, answer comprehension questions, and analyze real-world examples such as Johnny Depp v. Amber Heard. Listening tasks emphasize legal reasoning, burden of proof, and practical litigation considerations.

Speaking – Legal Advice Role-Play:
Students act as lawyers advising clients in realistic defamation scenarios. Case studies include a restaurant owner targeted by a food blogger, a skincare entrepreneur harmed by anonymous online accusations, and a teacher falsely accused in a WhatsApp group. Learners assess whether statements are defamatory, false, published, or protected opinion. They evaluate whether litigation is worthwhile and practice using structured legal language to give professional advice.

Writing & Research Project (Homework):
Learners research high-profile defamation cases such as Alex Jones and the Sandy Hook families, Dominion v. Fox News. They create a timeline presentation using legal vocabulary and reporting language.
