Corporate social responsibility
Lesson plan overview
This upper-intermediate and advanced business ESL worksheet explores the topic of Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR). Students learn about different activities related to CSR, learn useful vocabulary, practise listening and share their own ideas and opinions about the topic.
Vocabulary: The lesson begins with an initial discussion on Corporate Social Responsibility, reputation and ethical behaviour. Students then brainstorm different activities included in each of the 3 types of CSR (environmental, ethical and philanthropic). Then they put the activities provided in the correct category. In the pre-listening vocabulary section, students learn important collocations (raise awareness, take a leap, set an example). After that they work on a word formation exercise where they learn words such as commitment, awareness, partnership. This part of the lesson concludes with a gap fill and speaking exercise – students complete the statements with the missing verb and then discuss the statements.
Listening: Students watch a video “Our LEGO responsibility: protect the planet for future generations” and complete 2 activities. First they answer 7 questions about the video and then they complete the extracts from the video with the missing words.
Speaking: there are 2 speaking activities to wrap up this lesson. First students discuss different questions about CSR in pairs or small groups. Then they role-play a meeting where they need to come up with a CSR strategy for their company.
Homework: 3 research topics are suggested which aim to develop the topic further. The topics, combined with the additional resources provided on theenglishflows.com provide plenty of extra opportunities for contact with topic-related vocabulary in order to reinforce and enrich it
