Lesson plan overview
This B1–B2 ESL lesson on last-mile delivery and the future of logistics is ideal for students who want to improve their English through real-world topics and practical discussions. Students explore common delivery problems, learn essential logistics vocabulary, and investigate how technology is transforming the way parcels reach customers. The lesson helps learners develop their speaking and listening skills while discussing delivery experiences, customer expectations, sustainability, and innovations such as drones, delivery robots, mobile parcel lockers, and underground delivery systems. Speaking: Discussing last-mile delivery problems
Students discuss common parcel delivery issues, including missed deliveries, damaged packages, incorrect items, late arrivals, unreliable tracking information, and inconvenient collection points. They share their own experiences, identify the most frustrating problems, and consider how couriers, retailers, and customers could improve the delivery process.
Vocabulary: Last-mile delivery and logistics
Students learn and practise essential logistics vocabulary, including last-mile delivery, delivery window, failed delivery rate, route optimisation, delivery density, reverse logistics, real-time tracking, pickup point, and milk run. They match terms to their definitions and complete sentences to consolidate their understanding of the language used in the delivery and logistics industry, and then discuss a few questions given.
Listening: The future of parcel delivery
Students watch a YouTube video called “The Future of Parcel Delivery: Drones and Disruption” by McKinsey & Company, and complete a series of tasks. They identify innovative delivery methods, answer comprehension questions, and take notes on emerging technologies, including delivery drones, autonomous robots, mobile parcel lockers, home delivery robots, and underground parcel transport systems.
Speaking: Sustainable delivery solutions
Students compare different delivery methods and discuss which innovations are most realistic for their country or city. They consider whether they would trust drones and robots with their parcels, evaluate the benefits and drawbacks of automated delivery systems, and suggest ways to make parcel delivery more efficient and environmentally friendly.
