Can poaching ever be stopped?

Lesson plan overview

This ESL worksheet on poaching and wildlife conservation is based on a news report about an innovative measure to protect endangered rhinos. It is ideal for high B1 and B2-level English learners who are interested in environmental issues, animal protection, and global challenges. The lesson combines poaching and endangered species vocabulary and speaking activities, which encourage students not only to practice English but also to reflect on ethics, environmental protection, and international cooperation. Other lessons you might like are: “Phrasal verbs: the environment“, “Innovation inspired by nature“, “Pets“, and “Phrasal verbs: cause and effect“.

Speaking: The lesson begins with a speaking warm-up where students answer thought-provoking questions about wild animals, extinction, and hunting. This naturally introduces the theme of poaching.

Vocabulary: Next, students match key vocabulary to definitions (e.g., poaching, endangered species, habitat, conservation, to threaten, to smuggle)—giving them the linguistic tools to discuss the topic in depth. Students complete fictional wildlife documentary titles using the new vocabulary, then discuss what each film might be about and which one they would most like to watch. This activity combines creative thinking with vocabulary practice.

Functional language: Cause and Effect Practice
Learners practice using cause-and-effect connectors and verbs (e.g., causes, results in, leads to, threatens, poses a threat to, endangers) to create sentences about biodiversity loss. This section reinforces language useful for essays, debates, and presentations.

Vocabulary in Context: Why Animals Are Poached
Students read short texts explaining why different animals—such as elephants, rhinos, pangolins, tigers, sea turtles, and parrots—are poached. They then match animals to reasons, solidifying vocabulary while deepening understanding of real-world issues.

Listening: Radioactive Horns Project
Students watch a current video on South Africa’s groundbreaking project to insert radioisotopes into rhino horns, called “Radioactive isotopes protect South Africa’s rhinos from poaching“. In Listening A, they answer comprehension questions to understand the project’s purpose, impact, and ethical considerations. In Listening B, they complete answers using key terms (traceable, desirable, devalue, non-invasive, customs). This makes the listening not only about comprehension but also about targeted vocabulary acquisition.

Speaking: Discussion and Evaluation
Students discuss the effectiveness of making rhino horns radioactive, as well as the ethics of the project. Then, in groups, they evaluate different anti-poaching measures (e.g., stronger laws, more rangers, technology, community involvement, reducing demand). They consider each measure in terms of effectiveness, ease of implementation, and cost—encouraging critical thinking and structured debate.
