Phrasal verbs: pets

Worksheet overview

This worksheet is designed to help students learn and use common phrasal verbs related to pets in an engaging and interactive way. Through a variety of activities, students will become familiar with 12 pet-themed phrasal verbs and practise using them in context.

The first eight phrasal verbs (e.g. take in, clean up after, curl up, look after, act up, warm up to) are introduced through a short dialogue. Students are encouraged to infer the meanings from context and match each phrasal verb to its definition. They then create their own short dialogues to reinforce understanding and see the verbs in use.

In the next section, students complete a dialogue using missing phrasal verbs, introducing the remaining expressions (sniff around, run away, calm down). To further consolidate their understanding, they complete a short story by selecting the correct phrasal verbs.

The following activities focus on speaking. Students begin by discussing questions related to pets, followed by a discussion of common pet problems and possible solutions. They are also invited to share personal stories about their pets.

To round off the lesson (or as a homework task), students write a short paragraph describing a typical day in the life of their pet, using as many of the phrasal verbs as possible.

For additional speaking practice, conversation cards are included and can be used flexibly for pair or group work.
