Performance punishment
Lesson plan overview
This Business English lesson focuses on the concept of performance punishment—when top-performing employees are given more work instead of rewards—and its impact on workplace motivation and engagement. Through speaking, vocabulary, reading, and listening activities, students will explore how companies manage high achievers, prevent burnout, and maintain productivity without discouraging their best employees. Other lessons you might like are: “Performance appraisals“, “How to get promoted“, “Quiet quitting and quiet firing“, “Motivation“, “Micromanagement“, “Phrasal verbs: job performance“, “Phrasal verbs: leadership and management“, “Phrasal verbs: Human Resources“., and “Idioms: burnout“.
Speaking: The lesson begins with a discussion, where students reflect on how companies recognize good performance, the challenges of managing top performers, and their own experiences with workplace recognition (or the lack of it). They also complete a quiz about what motivates and demotivated them at work, and discuss their answers in pairs or small groups.
Vocabulary: Next, students expand their workplace vocabulary, learning expressions to describe employees based on their performance—such as high achiever, go-getter, star performer, disengaged employee, underachiever, and weak link. Through matching, categorization, and collocation-building exercises, they practice applying these terms in context.
Reading: A reading activity introduces the concept of performance punishment, explaining how high-performing employees often face larger workloads without compensation, leading to burnout and demotivation. Students identify the causes, consequences, and possible solutions for this workplace paradox and discuss their views on fair workload distribution and employee well-being.
Listening: The listening segment features a video called “5 Tips for managing a high-performing employee,” where students complete comprehension activities, note down the five management tips, and reflect on how to support top talent without overwhelming them. A post-listening discussion encourages critical thinking about workplace culture, boundaries, and communication.
Vocabulary review: Students complete sentences with a word from this lesson.
For additional speaking practice, printable conversation cards are available.
