End of the year – executive style

Lesson plan overview

This lesson explores how the end of the year is experienced differently by employees and executives in the C-suite. Students will develop vocabulary related to executive roles and responsibilities, engage in discussions, and analyze the differences through a video activity. Other lessons you might like are: “Performance appraisals”, “New Year resolutions”, “End of the year reflection“, and “Phrasal verbs: leadership and management”.

Speaking: The lesson begins with a set of conversation questions prompting students to reflect on the significance of the end of the year in their personal and professional lives. Next, students discuss a set of options related to year-end activities, such as reflecting on achievements, setting new goals, preparing reports, or planning celebrations. This helps activate their thoughts about the differences between employee and executive perspectives.

Vocabulary: Next, students learn about the different positions in the C-suite (CEO COO, CFE, etc.) and discuss a few conversation questions given. Next, they learn words and expressions that will later appear in the video (e.g. performance review, stock price, cut headcount, ruminate over, to set someone up for something). To practice, they complete 5 sentences and choose the correct word to complete 6 others. Then they discuss 8 conversation questions.

Listening: Students watch a video called “Year End – Executive Style”, which is divided into 3 parts. Finally, they engage in a post-listening discussion.

For more speaking practice, and to review the key vocabulary from this lesson, you can use the conversation cards.

By the end of the lesson, students will have a deeper understanding of year-end responsibilities across different professional levels and the language needed to articulate these concepts effectively.
