Emerging markets
Lesson plan overview
This Business ESL lesson deals with the topic of emerging markets. Students will learn a lot of useful economic terms, will discuss developing and developed countries, and will watch a video about emerging markets. Other lessons you might like are: “The happiest countries in the world”, “Brain drain”, and “Phrasal verbs: investing”.
The lesson starts with a discussion about developing and developed countries. Students talk about the differences and then put 14 characteristics into the correct category.
Vocabulary: Students look at 6 abbreviations (BRICS, ASEAN, OECD, GDP, FDI, IMF) and discuss what each one stands for. Then they check their answers and read a short definition of each one. Next, students read 7 sentences and match the expressions in bold (e.g., industrialization, stock market, volatility, to outperform, global trade) to their definitions. To practice, they complete a gap-fill activity. Next, students discuss a few conversation questions and practice the expressions from this lesson.
Listening: Students watch a video called “What is an emerging market?”, and complete 3 listening comprehension activities. Then they engage in a po-listening discussion.
Speaking: Finally, students are asked to research one developed economy and 1 emerging market and to compare them using specific indicators given (this task can also be assigned as homework).
For more speaking practice, you can use the conversation cards.
