Are you a collector or a hoarder?

Lesson plan overview

This ESL lesson plan is about collecting, the drive to collect, and when collecting turns into hoarding. Students will also look into the collectibles market and investing in collectibles. Other lessons you might find interesting are “Fabergé eggs”, “Stealth wealth”, “Priceless or overpriced? The value of art“, “Spring cleaning”, and “Throwaway culture”.

Speaking: The lesson starts with a few speaking activities. First, students discuss questions about collecting, things that they have collected, and the reasons behind the drive to collect. Next, they write down 10 items that people might collect, and discuss where collectors might potentially find a rare item for each collection.

Vocabulary: Students learn expressions related to collecting (e.g. hard to come by, prized possession, treasure trove, in mind condition, to hunt for, to declutter). To practice, they match the 2 halves of 9 sentences. Then, they discuss 7 conversation questions.

Listening: Students watch a video called Hobby or hoarding: The psychology behind the drive to collect”, and complete 2 listening comprehension activities.

Speaking: The collectibles market. Students discuss objects that lose or gain value over time. Then, they discuss investing in collectibles.
