Weaponized incompetence
Lesson plan overview
This advanced ESL worksheet is a highly engaging and relevant resource designed to introduce students to the modern concept of weaponized incompetence. Perfect for C1-C2 learners, this material connects language learning with real-world social and workplace dynamics, making the lesson meaningful and immediately applicable. It can be used in both general English and Business English classes, allowing students to explore relational and professional contexts. Students will analyze social and workplace dynamics, reflecting on personal, cultural, and gender-related influences, and develop critical thinking skills by evaluating motives behind behaviors and discussing ethical or practical consequences. Students interested in workplace communication, relationship dynamics, and social psychology will find this worksheet particularly interesting. Another lesson you might like is “Mental load and invisible labor“.
Activities included:
Lead-in & Speaking Discussion: Students begin with personal reflection questions, such as whether they have ever encountered someone avoiding responsibility. Discussion questions explore differences between genuine incompetence and strategic avoidance, prompting learners to analyze motives and behaviors.
Vocabulary: Realistic dialogues introduce key expressions in context. Example target expressions: pick up the slack, shirk responsibilities, shoulder the burden, call someone out, address the root cause, feed into, exploit someone’s goodwill, breed resentment. Students match expressions to definitions and practice correct usage in relationship, home, and workplace scenarios. Then, students paraphrase sentences using target expressions to reinforce vocabulary and grammar. This activity encourages active use of phrasal verbs and idiomatic expressions in formal and conversational contexts.
Listening Activities (Parts A, B, C): Students watch a video called “Understanding Weaponized Incompetence”. The video is broken down into 3 parts, and for time-management purposes, one part could be skipped. Tasks include gap-filling with correct word forms, note-taking, and identifying examples of weaponized incompetence. After watching the video, students engage in a post-listening discussion.
Vocabulary review: Students correct mistakes in 9 sentences, and then create their own sentences with the target vocabulary.
