Visiting Germany (for Euro 2024)
Lesson plan overview
This intermediate ESL lesson is about visiting Germany, and more specifically visiting Germany for Euro 2024. Students will discuss their experiences and knowledge about Germany, will compare visiting Germany during Euro 2024 vs visiting on a regular day, and will watch a video about 6 of the Euro 2024 host cities. You can find more football-related lessons here. You can find more travel-related lessons here.
The lesson starts with a couple of speaking activities. First, students discuss 8 conversation questions given. Then, they use the talking points given to compare visiting Germany during Euro 2024 vs visiting on a regular day. Next, they are given a map of Germany with the host cities of Euro 2024, and are asked to discuss what they know about each city.
Video: Students watch a video called “Ultimate UEFA EURO 2024 Guide: Explore Germany’s host cities, culture, and cuisine!”, and complete 2 activities (keep in mind that the video is quite long).
The rest of the activities are mainly focused on speaking. First, students discuss travelling for Euro 2024 on a budget. Then, they give examples of different things in order to practise collocations from this lesson (e.g. breathtaking view, charming village, trendy neighbourhood, rich heritage). Next, they are asked to research one of the Euro 2024 host cities that are not mentioned in the video and create a short presentation. Finally, they are given a few conversation questions related to Euro 2024.
For more speaking practice and vocabulary review, you can use the conversation cards.
