Using sports psychology to improve our everyday lives
Lesson plan overview
This lesson plan focuses on sports psychology and techniques each of us can use in our everyday lives. it is aimed at intermediate and upper-intermediate students. Students will learn adjectives to describe traits of sportspeople, watch a video and speak about the topic. You can combine it with the lessons: “Self-confidence“, “Is hosting the Olympics worth it?“, “Dealing with setbacks and failure“, “How are sports chosen for the OLympic games?“, “Doping in sports“, “Phrasal verbs: psychology“, “Idioms: sports performance“, and “Phrasal verbs: role models“.
Vocabulary: the lesson starts with an activity to revise and expand vocabulary about personality traits (self-discipline, drive, passion, determination, self-confidence). Students discuss which are the necessary traits athletes need to reach top level. After that, there is a pre-listening vocabulary matching exercise followed by a few questions in order to practise the target vocabulary.
Listening: Students watch a video named “4 secrets from sports psychology you can use in everyday life” and complete a table with relevant information from the video. Then work on prepositions used in the video.
Grammar: The grammar focuses on the structure “the+comparative…, the+comparative” with 2 exercises to encourage conversation.
Homework: 3 research topics are suggested which aim to develop the topic further. The topics, combined with the additional resources provided on theenglishflows.com provide plenty of extra opportunities for contact with topic-related vocabulary in order to reinforce and enrich it.
