The Oscars 2024

Lesson plan overview

The video for this lesson has been updated.

This breaking news ESL lesson is dedicated to the 2024 Oscars. It is focused on speaking, but it also introduces interesting expressions commonly used in relation to the Oscars. Other lessons you may find interesting are “Barbie fever”, “Idioms: entertainment”, and “Phrasal verbs: role models“.
Speaking: The lesson starts with a few conversation questions about the importance of the Oscars, and other film awards. Next, students complete a quiz about actors and actresses who have won or not won an Oscar in the past.
Vocabulary: Next, students learn vocabulary related to the Oscars. They look at 8 sentences, and match the expressions to their definitions (e.g. a nod, to take home, to make history, to be snubbed). After that students are given a few talking points in order to activate this vocabulary.
Videos: Students watch 2 videos: “Oscars 2024 highlights” and “Best moments from the 2024 Oscars“,   and complete 2 listening comprehension activities.
Grammar: Students learn how to use the structures should/shouldn’t have + past participle, and they use these structures, along with other useful expressions given, to discuss the winners and the nominees.
Speaking: Students engage in a post-listening discussion about the 2024 Oscars. Finally, they look at 4 opinions about the Oscars, and say which one they agree with the most.
Writing: Students are asked to write a review of one of the Oscar-nominated films. There are also 2 handouts with useful expressions and vocabulary for film reviews.
For more speaking practice, you can check out the conversation cards.
