Stereotypes
Lesson plan overview
This intermediate ESL lesson plan deals with the topic of stereotypes. Students will discuss different types of stereotypes, will watch a short video, and will discuss how to combat stereotypes. Other lessons you might find interesting are: “Cultures are not costumes (Cultural appropriation)“, “Paternity leave”, “Societal expectations“, “Stealth wealth“, “Why are some people left-handed?“, “Idioms: forgiveness and acceptance”, “Phrasal verbs: psychology”, “Mental load and invisible labor”, and “Idioms: moving abroad”.
First students make a list of 5 countries and discuss with a partner what stereotypes they know about these countries. Then, they discuss 4 conversation questions. Next, students read different stereotypes and match them to the correct type of stereotype (e.g. national stereotypes, occupational stereotypes, gender stereotypes, age stereotypes). Then they discuss the stereotypes and talk about other stereotypes for each type.
Vocabulary: Students learn 9 words related to stereotypes (cliché, to cloud your judgement, preconception, self-awareness, judgemental, target, threat, unbiased, subconscious) by looking at sentences containing the words and choosing the correct definition. Then, they discuss a few conversation questions.
Listening: Students watch a video called “Stereotypes: The truth behind cultural clichés”, and complete 3 different listening comprehension tasks.
Speaking: Next, students look at different professions and discuss the importance of these professions being unbiased. Finally, students look at tips to combat stereotypes and discuss them.
