Staying healthy while traveling

Lesson plan overview

This pre-intermediate lesson is about traveling and maintaining healthy habits while on vacation. Students will learn collocations with “habit” and “routines” and vocabulary about packing, watch a short video, and discuss the topic. You might also find the following lessons interesting: “New Year’s resolutions”, “Early birds vs night owls“, and “Phrasal verbs: daily routines”.
Speaking: The lesson starts with a discussion on healthy habits and routines. Students give examples of healthy and unhealthy habits in different categories (healthy eating, exercise, sleep).
Vocabulary: Students look at 6 questions, each containing a collocation with “habit” or “routine” (stick to a routine, fall back into a bad habit, disrupt your routine, kick a habit, follow a routine). Students match the expressions to their definitions, and discuss the questions. Then, they read 3 opinions about maintaining healthy habits while traveling, and choose the correct expression to complete the opinions.
Vocabulary: students learn vocabulary about packing items that help maintain healthy habits (e.g. hand sanitizer, bug repellent, exercise bands, earplugs, cooler, reusable water bottle). Then students discuss what they pack when they travel.
Speaking: Pre-listening discussion. Students look at a few statements and say which ones are true for them (e.g. “I make an effort to stay active by exploring the destination on foot.”)
Listening: Students watch a video called “How to stick to your healthy routine while on vacation”, and complete 2 listening comprehension activities. Finally, students engage in a post-listening discussion.
