The beauty of spring flower gardens
Lesson plan overview
This intermediate ESL lesson plan is dedicated to spring, flowers, and gardening. Students will learn useful vocabulary about spring flowers, will watch a video about Keukenhof garden, and will discuss spring and plants. You can also check out the video-based lessons “The benefits of being in nature”, “Seasonal allergies“, and “How we get tree planting wrong“, or the worksheet “Phrasal verbs: the weather“.
The lesson starts with a short vocabulary activity about changes that happen in spring. Then, students discuss different questions about spring, changes, favourite traditions, etc.
Vocabulary: Students learn about 10 spring flowers (e.g. snowdrop, daffodil, hyacinth, tulip, crocus, poppy) by matching the word to the correct photo. To practise, they ask and answer 7 questions about the flowers.
Listening: Students watch part of a video called “Ultimate guide 2024: Plan your Keukenhof trip” and take notes. Then they engage in a post-listening discussion.
Vocabulary: Next, students talk about gardening, and learn vocabulary related to gardening (e.g. to sow, to repot, to fertilise, to prune, to pick).
The last 2 activities are focused on speaking: First, students are given talking points and are asked for tips related to gardening activities such as planting, pests, watering, etc. Finally, they are given different options for gardening locations (e.g. an allotment, a rooftop garden, a greenhouse) and are asked to discuss the advantages and disadvantages to each one.
To review the target vocabulary, and for some more speaking practice, you can use the conversation cards.
