Ramadan

Lesson plan overview

This intermediate ESL lesson is dedicated to the topic of Ramadan, which Muslims around the world observe for 30 days every year. Students will learn useful words related to Ramadan, will discuss its significance, and will watch a short video about it.

Vocabulary: After an initial discussion about important days in Islam, and what students know about them, they work on vocabulary by matching the words to the correct photo (e.g. a mosque, dusk, dawn, a feast). Then they discuss how each of the words is related to Ramadan.

Speaking and listening: Next, students complete a quiz about Ramadan. To check their answers, they watch a video called “What is Ramadan?”. The second time they watch the video, they complete extracts from the video with the correct verb.

To practise more verbs related to Ramadan, students complete 5 sentences with the verbs given (e.g. to fast, to abstain, to donate, to reflect, to pray, to forgive).

Speaking: Next, depending on whether students observe Ramadan or not, they are given 2 sets of questions to discuss.

Vocabulary review: To review the vocabulary from this lesson, students complete a word formation activity.

Writing: Finally, students are asked to write and describe a celebration from their own country that aims to transmit the values of forgiveness, kindness, and compassion.

To review the target vocabulary, and for some more speaking practice, you can use the conversation cards.
