Planning a wedding
Lesson plan overview
This ESL lesson plan is about wedding planning. Students will learn essential vocabulary to talk about getting engaged, planning a wedding and getting married, will watch a short video about planning a wedding and will discuss various aspects of planning a wedding. Another interesting lesson related to event planning is “Planning the office Christmas party”. Another video-based lesson related to relationships is “What makes a relationship last?“. You can also combine this lesson with the worksheet “Idioms: love”, “Idioms: relationships“, and “Phrasal verbs: relationships and dating“.
Vocabulary: After an initial discussion, students look at a short dialogue including a few phrases about getting engaged and getting married (tie the knot, walk down the aisle, pop the question). Students work out the meaning of each expression and then match 6 sentences to the correct photo. Next, students look at a timeline from engagement to honeymoon and put the events in order. They also learn more essential vocabulary, such as reception, bachelor/bachelorette party, venue, budget, wedding registry. They practise the target vocabulary by discussing a few questions given. Next, they work on the different people at the wedding (bride, groom, best man, maid of honour, officiant). After matching the words to their definitions, they discuss a few conversation questions.
Video: Students watch a video “Tips from a wedding planner: first steps for planning your wedding“. The first time they watch it, they write down the 6 tips the speaker gives. Then they watch it again and take notes about each tip.
Speaking: The last 2 activities are focused on speaking. First, students discuss wedding etiquette. Then they talk about potential problems and solutions before and on the wedding day. Here they also revise structures about possibility (to be likely to, might/could, will probably).
