Overtourism
Lesson plan overview
This ESL lesson plan deals with the topic of overtourism. Students will learn useful vocabulary about the topic, will discuss causes and consequences of overtourism, and will talk about possible solutions. Other lessons you might find interesting are: “Cruise ships“, “Travel destinations”, “Accessible tourism”, “Tourist traps“, “Gentrification“, “Phrasal verbs: travel”, “Idioms: travel”.
Speaking: The lesson starts with a few speaking activities. First, students discuss 5 conversation questions. Then, they write down 3 tourist destinations that have impressed them and 3 that have disappointed them, and talk about the reasons. Next, they discuss the causes and negative effects of overtourism.
Vocabulary: Students learn 10 words related to overtourism (e.g. curb, flock to, overcrowding, ban, cap, hotspot). To practice, they complete 7 article headlines with the correct word. The links to the articles are provided, so here you can also make students read some of the articles.
Listening: Students watch a video called “Is it bad to travel? The impact of overtourism, the darker side of travel & what we can do about it” and complete 3 listening comprehension activities. After that students engage in a post-listening discussion.
Speaking: Finally, students take a look at different measures that can be introduced to curb overtourism and discuss the pros and cons of each one.
